I'm Jules, a Senior Digital Designer (UIUX), I've been working within digital for over 13 years.
I am a hands on digital designer, mostly working with responsive UI design. UX design has been a growing area as more clients request flows, wireframes and documentation. I aim to work closely with all team members, whether they are based in India or Russia for example, during discovery or prototyping. I’ll be happy to use any platforms from Slack to Skype in order to communicate well with the team. I've been involved with content workshops, brainstorming sessions and visual exploration. Visuals can also be produced based on existing design languages. So whether it's a big project or small, I aim to inject creativity at any stage of the project.
I started out my career working with Macromedia Flash and Director, animating and programming interactive experiences using ActionScript and Lingo from as early as 2002. We had great creative freedom and the web was ablaze with experimental, playful digital games and sound toys back then. From 2004, I started teaching and coding websites with HTML and CSS. This gave me a good grasp of web fundamentals along with the inevitable rise of web standards and best practices, which paved the way for usability and accessibility. The industry was growing exponentially, and my role evolved to UI/UX.
It’s been widely discussed that design should not only centre itself on pixel perfection and branding (albeit an important part), it must position itself along with user experience. A designer should be immersed within a multi-disciplinary system and engage in UX thinking from the outset. By doing this we can play a vital role in securing objectives for the business and its brand, as well as shaping the aesthetics so that it is both pleasing and functional.
A visual design, through its life cycle, needs to be dynamic and evolve, it’s a moving system that will continue to be iterated and tested at every level and by every member of the team. So I’ve learnt over the years to think globally and allow the team (ie. UX, Developers, Copywriters) to help define the rules with you. Test, refine and polish.
Photography is an important area within my work. I've been exploring this for the past 15 years, and now approaching this with fresh eyes in my latest course, studying for a Diploma @ The British Academy of Photography. I'm aiming to integrate this work and knowledge within my digital work, not only to allow for a stronger narrative, but to highlight real world references and bring digital work to life. I’ve been recently exploring studio lighting and photo-retouching/post production. I enjoy taking photographs of woodland, nature and portraiture using natural light.
